Thousands of cancer patients will have their treatment matched to a genetic profile under personalised medicine programs that are revolutionising healthcare in Australia. So far, the federal government has stayed in the background, but there are growing calls for Australia to follow the lead of Britain and set a target for all cancer sufferers to be genetically typed to pair their treatment with designer drugs that zero in on mutations in the DNA of cancer.
