Skin Cancer: Drug trials successful in stopping melanoma

Patients with melanoma have been given new hope by ground breaking Australian research that could halve the mortality rate from the cancer. In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers at the Melanoma Institute Australia announced they had successfully trialled a combination of treatments to prevent melanoma from spreading. ‘‘Our ultimate goal of making melanoma a chronic rather than a terminal illness is now so much closer to being achieved,’’ the institute’s conjoint medical director Georgina Long said.
