Research: Cannabis hope as cancer help

Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute Medical Oncology Unit director Niall Tebbutt told a sold-out Medicinal Cannabis Symposium in Melbourne last week that while data was limited, there were preclinical studies showing that cannabinoids could inhibit cancer cell growth and stimulate cell death, which justified further testing in humans. He said a 100-patient clinical trial had been proposed in which the main goal would be testing the effect of cannabis on overall quality of life, and also measure its ability to shrink tumours and reduce reliance on pain relief.
